Despite these flaws, I'm glad I watched the show. And the final sequence with the portal left me feeling hollow. The multiverse was poorly utilized until John started travelling in the fourth season.
Juliana was a strong but surprisingly shallow protagonist that I struggled to invest in.
I loved certain aspects - the wildly-imaginative production design and the always-fascinating Smith family, for instance - but thought others fell flat. The way I feel about Kido can be applied to the entire show. Now he's working for Yakuza in San Francisco? Kido mentions "atonement" but it's hard to imagine him doing much good for such a seedy organization in the city. Somehow, that would have felt like a fitting end for a character that, while showing moments of heroism, committed some unforgivable war crimes throughout the show. Part of me wishes that Kido had died in the gas chamber where Frank Frink - a pro-resistance fighter that died last season - lost his family way back in season one.
It was appropriate for his character - one that puts duty above all else - to arrest the conniving officers who arranged Tagomi's murder and tell the Crown Princess that it was time for Japan to give up the West Coast territory. Kido was one of my favorite characters in the show (I loved his cold demeanour and always-immaculate workwear) and Tagomi's early departure meant that he was always at the heart of the events in San Francisco during season four. The liberation was a reflection, though, of Japan's waning military power. They did more in a single season than Frank and the resistance managed in the last three combined! I didn't have a strong attachment to the group's members, though, and felt that their victory over the Japanese empire was a little too easy. The Man in the High Castle Season 4 is streaming now on Amazon Prime.The BCR were an intriguing parallel to the Black Power movement that emerged in our world during the late 1960s and 70s. This, combined with Liam managing to shoot Himmler (Kenneth Tigar) puts the Resistance at perhaps its strongest position yet in the series, though fans will have to tune into Season 4 to find out if Juliana can return from a parallel dimension in time to help them. However, this spurs Ed on to start spreading Frank's anti-fascist art in San Francisco. This art is posted up across the neutral zone by Frank with Ed (DJ Qualls) until Frank is captured by Chief Inspector Kido (Joel de la Fuente) who beheads him as revenge for causing the explosion. He was living in a group of Jewish people pretending to be Catholics and had become a pacifist making anti-fascist art. Juliana came across Frank, who was severely burned in an explosion last season, in the Neutral Zone with Liam/Wyatt Price (Jason O'Neill) on her way to be smuggled into the GNR. The Man in the High Castle Season 3 also saw Frank's death courtesy of a ritual decapitation. He also started to blame the Nazis for the death of his son Thomas (Quinn Lord), who was so loyal to the party that he volunteered to be euthanized after discovering he had a degenerative disease. "The Man in the High Castle" Season 3 saw the Nazis blow up the Statue of Liberty. Season 3 started to imply that Smith himself could join the resistance in the final season after he witnessed the Nazis blowing up the Statue of Liberty as part of their mission to erase all pre-Nazi American history. Through Hawthorne, John Smith learns that only humans who do not already exist or are dead in the parallel reality they want to cross over into can successfully make the trip. She manages to get pretty close to the machine before getting captured and sent to the same prison that Hawthorne Abendsen/The Man in the High Castle (Stephen Root) himself is in after he was captured earlier in the season. Juliana also started to hatch a plan to destroy the machine by smuggling herself into the GNR. However, he himself was killed by Juliana, who slashed his throat and returned the files to Tagomi (Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa). This came after he was arrested at the end of Season 2 and forced into a re-education program that ended with him having to kill his father.
